I overheard a conversation today that made my blood boil.
Two adults talking about the stupidity shown by "kids these days". Being that I am their colleague at work, I assume that they were not talking about me and the interns, since we don't seem to be very stupid, overly irresponsible, or mean. But here goes how I feel about kids these days.
I have been so incredibly fortunate and blessed to have two parents who taught me that education was the most important thing I could ever do for myself (besides Faith) and that daylight was made to be enjoyed. I knew this lesson by the time I was about 3. I'm not going to brag on myself, but I think that I turned out alright. I don't think I'm any more irresponsible than the average 23 year old, and I signed an offer for a great job before my last semester of college even started. Who do I credit with my success? My parents. Well, God too, duh.
This is what I think is wrong with kids these days : their parents. When you let your child sit in front of the television from the time they get home until the time they go to bed, you might as well call yourself a bed and breakfast, because you are not parenting them. DO NOT complain about kids these days being selfish, mean, promiscuous, unruly and rude when they have been raised by a television. It is not their fault that they have been exposed to mouthy teenagers who do not listen to their parents, women walking around in little to no clothing, the topic of sex being ok as long as two people are in "love", and the harmless fun of giving the class clown a hard time (bullying, anyone?). Of course kids will watch TV if they can - I would have. But I was allowed 30 minutes of TV time a day, otherwise, it had to be educational.
And my parents complaints about the way their kids turned out? Well, I just know that when I think about the time my parents took away from their own lives to raise JUST ME (and there are 4 kids in my family)... well, it's shown me a lot about what is really going on with kids these days.
